Austin Powers actor convicted of torture for role in gang rape
Joseph Hyungmin Son, best known for playing Dr. Evil’s Oddjob-parodying henchman Random Task in 1997’s Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, has been found guilty of torture for his connection to the gang rape of a woman the night of Christmas Eve, 1990. According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, on the night of December 24, 1990, Son and another man, Santiago Gaitan, approached a woman who was out walking her dog, pretending to be lost and asking for directions. They then grabbed her and dragged her to the back of their vehicle, where they reportedly pistol-whipped her, “raped her repeatedly, sodomized her, and forced her to give them oral sex.” The details only get more horrible from there: Son “also threatened to kill her, penetrated her vagina with a firearm, and counted the bullets in the gun out loud while the victim pleaded for her life.” Eventually the victim was turned loose, naked and blindfolded with her own pants.
Son managed to evade capture for his involvement in the incident until a 2008 arrest for felony vandalism, after which he was forced to submit a DNA sample that eventually linked him to the case. Gaitan has already received 17 years after pleading guilty to various kidnapping and rape charges—charges that Son fought. But although the prosecution only proceeded with the torture count, due to the statute of limitations on sexual assault charges, Son is still expected to receive anywhere between 15 years to life in prison. And much like actor Shelley Malil did with The 40-Year-Old Virgin, he’s also expected to make watching Austin Powers really uncomfortable. [via E! Online]
