Ava DuVernay adapting Octavia E. Butler’s sci-fi book Dawn for TV
As reported by Deadline, Selma and A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay has teamed up with Charles D. King and Victoria Mahoney to develop a TV adaptation of Dawn, the 1987 sci-fi novel by Octavia E. Butler. DuVernay and King will executive produce the series, with Mahoney writing the script. As Deadline notes, this will be the first time one of Butler’s works has been adapted for TV.
Dawn is the first book in what’s called the Lilith’s Brood trilogy, and it’s about a black woman who gets taken on board an alien ship a few hundred years after mankind has effectively destroyed the planet with nuclear war. The tentacle-faced aliens offer to help her resurrect the human race, but some of the remaining humans aren’t crazy about working with the aliens.
