Avengers: Age Of Ultron won’t be getting a director’s cut, is already pretty long

By most accounts, Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel, Age Of Ultron, was a lot of robot-smashing fun. One common complaint, though, was that the 141-minute film wasn’t nearly long enough. Or, at the very least, that it wasted far too much time on Thor hanging out in a cave. We’re not even joking now. That cave stuff was stupid, and it took a lot of time away from robot smashing. Frankly, we’re still really upset about that.

Joss Whedon was actually upset about that too, for a while. In an interview he gave after the movie came out, Whedon basically confirmed that Marvel forced him to put the cave scene in the movie as a setup for future MCU stories. This information, combined with an earlier report that suggested the blu-ray version of Age Of Ultron would have an “extended” cut of the movie, was enough to convince some fans that Marvel would eventually give in to Whedon’s artistic vision and let him release a longer, cave-less director’s cut. Unfortunately for fans of no caves, though, that’s not going to happen—and, for once, the person you can blame for preventing you from getting more Joss Whedon stuff is Joss Whedon himself.

In an interview with Collider, Whedon declared that he has “never” wanted “to do a director’s cut of anything,” because he’s always preferred to make a movie that both he and the studio are happy with. On top of that, he also says that he’s “super fucking lazy and [putting together a director’s cut of Age Of Ultron] sounds like it would be hard.” Those are certainly good reasons, so it’s hard to blame the guy for being super fucking lazy. Thankfully, Whedon does note that there will be “a bunch of stuff on the DVD in extras that were meant to be there,” so it sounds like there will at least be a lot of deleted scenes. We don’t know about you, but we really hope those deleted scenes involve some robots getting smashed.
