Awards season heats up tonight with the Screen Actors Guild Awards
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, January 21. All times are Eastern. It’s an honor just to be nominated.
Top pick
The Screen Actors Guild Awards (TNT/TBS, 8 p.m.): For a bit of a sneak peak of Oscar night, check out the Screen Actors Guild Awards on TNT and TBS tonight. Much like the Golden Globes, the evening will feature performers from both movies and TV; whether this evening will be as eventful as the Golden Globes were this year, you’ll have to tune in to find out. But it’s always fun to see all the ensemble casts hanging out together. Besides, did you know that the current SAG president is Gabrielle Carteris? 90210’s Andrea? It was obvious from her tenure as editor of the West Beverly Blaze that she was born leadership material.
Regular coverage
Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access, 8:30 p.m.)
Shameless (Showtime, 9 p.m.)
The Chi (Showtime, 10 p.m.)
Divorce (HBO, 10 p.m.)
Wild card
The Resident (Fox, 10 p.m.): Oh, he’s a wild card all right. We don’t know about you, but our Twitter feed has been flooded with promos for The Resident. It appears that Fox is going all out to push the latest renegade doctor drama, with Matt Czuchry as a third-year resident who goes for feelings over logic, dammit! It’s too bad, because Czuchry had almost lured us back in after his turn as Gilmore Girls’ terrible Logan with The Good Wife’s honorable and likable Cary Agos. Now this. But hey, if you like soap opera-y medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy (there’s a famous surgeon who’s killing patients with his hand tremor! Czuchry’s doctor also has a checkered past! In no shock to anyone, Czuchry’s and Emily VanCamp’s characters have a romantic history together!) but would prefer it with a much smaller cast, this medical case-of-the-week might be your jam.
