This weekend’s above-average Saturday Night Live—we credit host Aziz Ansari and current MVP Kate McKinnon—featured a sketch that echoes an argument/conversation we’ve been having at AVC HQ for the past couple of months: Is La La Land a solid, enjoyable musical or is it made of some kind of film magic so extraordinary that only a monster wouldn’t place it above all other movies released last year? In this sketch, Ansari stands in for those of us who merely liked La La Land, and who’s harassed by the taste cops that were blown away by its, y’know, dancing and singing or whatever.
