Last year Bad Brains vocalist Paul “H.R.” Hudson was diagnosed with SUNCT, a rare neurobiological disorder that causes him to suffer from debilitating headaches multiple times per day. At that same time his wife Lori, who is also his chief caregiver, started a GoFundMe page to assist in the cost of treatment as it fell outside of H.R.’s insurance plan. In a statement on that GoFund Me page Lori stated, “The headaches come randomly, with no warning, at all hours of the day and night; but for him, they are much worse at night. The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs—repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night. He can’t work. He has no quality of life.”
On February 21, in an attempt to lessen the intensity of his headaches, H.R. will undergo brain surgery. In an interview with Loudwire H.R. addresses the surgery with the nonchalance for which he‘s become known, “[My wife] took me to the hospital so I would learn about what was going on in my head, because I was experiencing bad headaches at the time… And the doctor came to me and he said we’re going to have a surgery.” Loudwire also notes that H.R. claims to be “unafraid” of the surgery, and that the surgeon has done this procedure over 200 times.
This all comes after the release of Finding Joseph I, an oral history of the Bad Brains frontman that was released last December, which was co-authored by the director of a forthcoming documentary also called Finding Joseph I. The GoFundMe page that was launched last March remains active, for those looking to contribute.
