Bad news for fans of quality TV

According to this article, Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Daniel Palladino have decided not to re-up with The Gilmore Girls for a seventh season. Ouch. GG is one of the most distinctively written and directed shows on television (and consistently one of the best) so this is a real loss. The chatter on the Television Without Pity boards has mostly been of the "good riddance, this show sucks now anyway variety," but I can't agree. I've liked these last two difficult seasons, which seem pretty true to the experience of breaking away from the comforts of home and finding your own identity. I hate to think that the show will start to sink without the Palladinos, but I can't think of an instance in which so major a creative force has left a show and it hasn't been devastating.

Not to blow things out of proportion, but post-shark-jumping TV shows are the worst thing in the world. Well, maybe not that, but it's hard not to feel like you've wasted your time. I spent years watching (okay, obsessing over) The X-Files and what did it get me? A slow, sinking feeling that I'd been jerked around all along. Now I bail on shows at the frist sign of trouble. (Hello Taylor Townshend? Goodbye O.C.. Curb Your Enthusiasm starts straining for gags? Goodbye season pass. Lost, I'm keeping my eye on you.) Let's hope it somehow doesn't come to that with The Gilmore Girls. It's been good for too long.
