Baez can't play for troops
After accepting an invitation from John Mellencamp to play at Walter Reed Army Medical Center last week, Joan Baez has been barred from performing there. She's now hinting at political motivations; the Army's been explaining it with contract mumbo-jumbo. It's not impossible that Baez is wrong: Recently, the USO has allowed such anti-war voices as Henry Rollins and Michael Franti to perform for troops in Iraq, and medical science stills knows so little about the impact of shrillness on soldiers' recovery process.
