Barack and Michelle Obama, R2-D2 enjoy one final Star Wars-themed dance party

Back in 2003, Bart Simpson daydreamed of having a “moon party in outer space with R2-D2 playing the bass.” While that particular prophecy has not yet come to pass, President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle managed to do something comparable yesterday when they staged an impromptu White House dance-off with legendary droid R2-D2 and even a couple of those pesky Stormtroopers, all to the strains of “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson. It was all in recognition of Star Wars Day, an annual observance of sci-fi’s most powerful and, yes, beloved franchise. One might think that a selection from Meco’s Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk might have been appropriate under the circumstances, but the Ronson tune seemed to please those present. “My favorite song,” exclaimed the First Lady, upon hearing the ubiquitous megahit. “How did you know?” In a way, it’s sad to think that this is the last May 4th the Obamas will spend in office. At least they made the most of it, managing to bridge the gap between the Rebellion and the Empire through music and dance. Perhaps by this time next year, R2-D2 will be serving drinks to President Trump, just as he did for Jabba The Hutt in Return Of The Jedi.

The First Couple later shared the sweetly geeky moment on the official White House Facebook account. Don’t believe it? Just watch.
