Barack Obama gets yet another song tribute
Has any presidential candidate ever inspired more song tributes than Barack Obama? First there was the infamous Obama Girl's "I've Got A Crush On Obama." Then came the Rush Limbaugh-championed "Barack The Magic Negro," NPR's "MacArthur Park"-like "Ode To Obama," and far, far too many YouTube videos hoping to jump Obama Girl's train: a hastily retitled cash-in; a West Side Story parody; a Muppets parody; a Phil Collins parody (at least, we hope that's what it is).
Now there's also "Obama" from "bi-continental" worldbeat band Extra Golden's newest record for Thrill Jockey, Hera Ma Nono. Apparently, when Extra Golden's Kenyan members needed visas to enter the US last fall, it was the Illinois senator who came to their rescue. In return, the group gave Obama yet another musical tribute to add to his "Songs About Me" playlist—although we don't speak Kenyan, so we can only guess at what they're actually saying. (Probably something along the lines of, "We will not vote for the white woman / Something about her just rubs us the wrong way / You know what I mean? / Like, she seems kind of soulless / Nothing against her or her husband / She just gives us the creeps.")
