Bates Motel is back in business
Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Monday, March 9. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Bates Motel (A&E, 9 p.m.): Everyone’s favorite messed up mother-son relationship returns, as the third season of Bates Motel premieres on A&E tonight. According to the official TV Guide synopsis: “Norma sets boundaries with Norman in the season three premiere.” Um, yes. It’s about time? Judging on how things turn out, we’re guessing those boundaries are pretty minimal. In any case, we’re always happy about Vera Farmiga being on our screens. Alex McCown will be covering the new season for TV Club.
Also noted
Steven Universe (Cartoon Network, 5 p.m.): TV Club coverage of Steven Universe starts again, with Eric Thurm covering the five new episodes Cartoon Network is airing this week.
Gravity Falls (Disney XD, 8:30 p.m.): Not much is known about tonight’s big Gravity Falls cliffhanger. For more information, let’s go straight to one of the sources:
Jane The Virgin (The CW, 9 p.m.): Jane The Virgin returns after its short break with “Chapter Fifteen,” in which Rafael proposes to Jane and Xo reveals she might be pregnant. In less-telenovela-twisty news, Jane also decides to kick it into gear on writing a book.
Better Call Saul (AMC, 10 p.m.): In “Five-O,” Mike has to seek help from an unexpected source when his past comes back to haunt him. Watch the episode and then check back in TV Club for our official Better Call Saul correspondent Donna Bowman’s review.
The Returned (A&E, 10 p.m.): After Bates Motel, A&E premieres its new scripted drama, a remake of a French series. The Returned takes place in a small town that gets turned upside down when a bunch of people who have been dead for years start mysteriously reappearing.
Elsewhere in TV Club
Tim Heidecker talked to The A.V. Club about the webseries On Cinema At The Cinema, podcast culture, and Hollywood. Also check out this For Our Consideration from Brandon Nowalk, who believes HBO’s Looking “is that rare TV series you could call ‘the best show you’re not watching.’”
What else is on?
The Bachelor (ABC, 8 p.m.): In the live finale, Chris returns to Iowa with finalists Whitney and Becca. He introduces the two women to his family and tries to decide who, if anyone, deserves his final rose.
The Voice (NBC, 8 p.m.): The Battle Round begins, with advisers Ellie Goulding, Lionel Richie, Meghan Trainor, and Nick Jonas dropping by to offer their own wisdom. The Levine-Shelton feud no doubt continues.
The Following (Fox, 9 p.m.): Ryan Hardy and crew race to find out if the latest slew of murders have anything at all to do with Joe Carroll, who remains unseen so far this season. Meet the character who Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya refers to as “a stand-in for the show’s own voice on violence for violence’s sake.”
The Originals (The CW, 8 p.m.): Rebekah encounters a coven of witches looking for revenge and learns a little more about the body she’s currently in. Elijah enlists a respected elder witch to help her out. Everyone’s still freaking out about baby Hope. Business as usual for vampire-witch-and-werewolf-ridden New Orleans.
Jaws (AMC, 6 p.m.): Bill Murray singing a literal version of the Jaws theme song was one of the highlights of SNL 40, but you can relive the movie that started it all on AMC tonight. Have fun being scared of the ocean and bad special effects for the next few weeks!
Julie & Julia (E!, 8 p.m.): Remember that one time when an internet vigilante removed Julie from Julie & Julia? As much as we love Amy Adams, we were so grateful. But if you’re a purist, you can watch the actual film on E! tonight. You can always just change the channel for Julie’s parts.
Basketball championships are happening
Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament: A Semifinal (FS1, 6:30 p.m.)
Southern Basketball Championship (ESPN2, 7 p.m.)
American Athletic Women’s Basketball Championship (ESPN, 7 p.m.)
Colonial Basketball Championship (NBC Sports, 7 p.m.)
Metro Atlantic Basketball Championship (ESPN2, 9 p.m.)
