Beavis and Butt-Head, one-time stars of their own eponymous MTV animated series, don’t always get proper credit for the diversity of their musical tastes. Sure, the two chortling adolescents wore T-shirts emblazoned with the logos of AC/DC and Metallica, respectively, but they also made the bulk of their episodes during the height of ’90s hip-hop, so they worshiped at the altar of Dre, Snoop, and other rappers of the era. While watching the “Gin And Juice” video, Beavis even dubiously claimed to have come from Compton. (Butt-Head wasn’t buying it: “You’ve never been to Compton. You’re never gonna go to Compton.”) As long as a video didn’t “suck,” they were into it, regardless of genre.
Although West Coast rap dominated the pop charts during the heyday of Beavis & Butt-Head, the cartoon hooligans could also enjoy some East Coast flavor on occasion. “Da Rockwilder,” a 2001 track by Method Man and Redman, never came up for review on Beavis & Butt-Head, as it never got an official music video and was released during the cartoon duo’s 14-year hiatus. But that hasn’t stopped internet agitator Mylo The Cat (real name: Adam Schleichkorn) from creating an animated mashup video for “Da Rockwilder” using clips from the MTV series and the 1996 film Beavis And Butt-Head Do America. For some arcane reason, Morty from Rick And Morty turns up here for a second, and Snoop is here, too, though he made a live-action appearance alongside Beavis in an MTV special, so that’s more understandable.
Normally, Beavis and Butt-Head have a difficult time composing complete thoughts, let alone coherent sentences, but temporarily blessed with the microphone skills of Method Man and Redman, they’re positively eloquent in this video, dropping lightning-fast rhymes full of clever allusions and wordplay. Long-time fans of the MTV series will be happy to note that some familiar supporting characters make cameos in this video, including hippie teacher David Van Driessen and local wuss Stewart Stevenson. No Daria this time, though. Maybe next time, Mylo The Cat?
