Beck, Fiona Apple, others cover ’60s folk for concert and tribute album
If you’ve ever listened to one of Beck’s quiet and moody albums, like Sea Change or his recent Morning Phase, and thought, “Man, Beck sounds like he should be playing in Laurel Canyon in the ’60s,” it seems Beck might agree with you. Pitchfork reports that the easygoing musician, along with Fiona Apple, Cat Power, and others, are set to perform a concert tribute to the birth of California folk rock, and release an accompanying album.
Called Echo In The Canyon, the concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of the advent of the California folk rock music scene, with contemporary artists covering songs by The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Turtles, The Association, Buffalo Springfield, and more. Along with Beck, the artists taking part in the festivities include Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spektor, Jade (formerly of Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros), and—weirdly—Jakob Dylan. (Is there that much nostalgia for “One Headlight”?) The concert takes place October 12, and will be followed by a covers album by the same artists, to be released in 2016. Finally, someone is capitalizing on the hot craze among the kids for all things Mamas & The Papas-related. Check out the cover of the Turtles’ “You Showed Me,” by Cat Power and Jakob Dylan, below.
