Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard will be covering Teenage Fanclub’s Bandwagonesque for an exclusive vinyl-only release. The album will be part of Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious vinyl subscription club. “Bandwagonesque is my favorite record by my favorite band of all time,” explains Gibbard in a press release. “It came along at a pivotal time in my musical life and I’ve loved it for over 25 years. It’s been such a blast taking these songs apart to see how they work and then putting them back together again.”
Sounds Delicious is a monthly vinyl subscription service offering full-length album covers. Other 2017 releases will featured The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart With Kristin Kontrol with members of Titus Andronicus performing Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever and Jonathan Rado of Foxygen doing Springsteen’s Born To Run.
1991’s Bandwagonesque was the third album by Scottish power poppers Teenage Fanclub and famously beat out Nirvana’s Nevermind for the number one spot in Spin’s album of the year poll. “Suddenly there were a lot of people aware of the album,” recalled singer/songwriter Norman Blake to Spin in 2016. “Sadly, the problem was that people didn’t go out and buy it.”
While the album didn’t break as big as that other alternative rock classic, everyone can rest assured that at least Gene Simmons got paid. According to the Kiss bassist’s book Sex Money Kiss, as Simmons had trademarked a logo of a moneybag with a dollar symbol, even he got a check from Geffen Records, thanks to Sharon Fitzgerald’s album design.
