Berkeley is offering a Dothraki-intensive course this summer
With such a long wait still in store for the season-seven premiere of Game Of Thrones, fans will need a hobby to help pass the time, one that doesn’t involve watching a block of ice melt. You could try to make your own Iron Throne or house sigils, but those are still just temporary distractions. Why not immerse yourself in the language of Khal Drogo and his ancestors? The University Of California-Berkeley is offering a six-week intensive course on Dothraki, but you won’t be taught by some couch potato who’s watched the first six seasons 20 times, though they could probably be trusted to place your order at a restaurant.
Dothraki creator David J. Peterson is teaching “The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention,” where students will learn more than verbs and guttural sounds. The course is more about the “art of making a language, rather than a study into the grammar and the vocabulary of one.” Peterson, who also created High Valyrian for GoT, has been involved in other Dothraki-based classes. But if you’re not already enrolled at Berkeley, you’ll just have to make do with that Random House app.
