Big Ballers: The Movie
When Master P and No Limit Films put out the low-budget, defiantly amateurish gangsta epic I'm 'Bout It last year, few could have guessed how influential the movie would be. Not only has the superhumanly prolific P put out a pair of films since then, with more on the way, but a slew of rappers have caught the cinema bug and put out short-form and long-form videos of their own. The upside to this trend is that the films being made by rap labels tend to be egalitarian in spirit, with the largely amateur auteurs making movies unencumbered by traditional notions of what constitutes professional filmmaking. The downside is that these films are usually really, really bad. Unfortunately, Big Ballers: The Movie—the first movie put out by Big Baller Films and Records, home of such distinguished performers as Lady Ice, Po' Boy, and The Mint Squad—is such an incoherent, amateurish mess that it makes P's cinematic endeavors look like the lost works of Stanley Kubrick by comparison. Big Ballers: The Movie tells the tale of two brothers who get mixed up in the street game and are forced to tangle with scandalous hoes, devious drug dealers, and assorted other criminal low-lifes. But despite its decent soundtrack, there's little to distinguish Big Ballers: The Movie from video projects assembled by beginning Communication Arts students in colleges all over the country. From its leaden, sub-community-theater-level acting to dialogue that wouldn't pass muster in an amateur porn film, Big Ballers is one terrible movie. And, for a film named after a record label, it's surprisingly short on music: There are no musical performances, and fans of Big Ballers artists like Po' Boy and Lady Ice will be disturbed to see their heroes turn in little more than glorified cameos. Fans of The Real World, however, will be delighted to see that Real World and Road Rules cast member Cynthia Roberts has a substantial role as the protagonist's nagging, pregnant girlfriend.
