Big-screen biopic in the works for surprise Britain's Got Talent star who is not Susan Boyle

David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley And Me) will direct a big-screen biopic of Paul Potts, the former cell phone salesman turned unlikely singing sensation who surprised everyone by winning Britain’s Got Talent in 2007 despite being not very attractive. Potts’ triumph—when he took the stage, as judge Simon Cowell described, as “guy with a funny little suit and bad teeth who looked very nervous,” then proceeded to blow everyone away with his rendition of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma”—set the stage for a similar upset by Susan Boyle, who is probably more famous and thus a likelier candidate for a biopic, except for the fact that by all accounts she is intermittently batshit crazy.

By contrast, Potts is a likable underdog whose life should make for an easygoing comedy tracing his “origins as a chubby child to awkward portly adult with a passion for opera, and the various mishaps along the way that kept his spectacular voice a secret,” without things dissolving into an epilogue involving emotional meltdowns, cursing out fans, and stays in a mental hospital. (Besides, you just know someone’s saving that story for later.)
