Bill Hader is playing Alpha 5 in the Power Rangers movie
The new Power Rangers movie continues to summon some big-name help for its supporting cast, with Entertainment Weekly reporting that Bill Hader will be playing aye-yi-yi-prone helper robot Alpha 5 in the upcoming film. Hader joins a cast that includes Bryan Cranston as giant floating head Zordon, Elizabeth Banks as the villainous Rita Repulsa, and a cast of relative newcomers as the Rangers themselves.
The high-pitched, often bumbling Alpha served as comic relief on the original series, where he was voiced by Invader Zim’s Richard Horvitz, and physically played by a number of actors, including Romy J. Sharf and Andy Sellner. Meanwhile, Hader—whose Documentary Now! is currently airing on IFC— is no stranger to giving voice to robotic individuals: along with Ben Schwartz, he provided the vocalizations for beloved ball-droid BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Power Rangers is currently set for a 2017 release.
Note: A previous version of this story claimed that Sharf and Sellner provided Alpha 5’s voice, not his physical performance. We apologize for the mistake.
