Bill Hader and Quinta Brunson team up for The Cat In The Hat
Pro: Two very funny actors are in a movie together. Con: It's for an animated film, The Cat In The Hat
Bill Hader and Quinta Brunson created two of TV’s best comedies, albeit in very different ways, of the past decade. The creators and stars of Barry and Abbott Elementary, respectively, are now teaming up for another project. Sadly, it’s not an enticing, hilarious small-screen adventure or a fun rom-com (yet?). But they will lead the voice cast of Warner Bros. Animation’s The Cat In The Hat.
The source material is, of course, Dr. Seuss’ acclaimed 1957 children’s book about an anthropomorphic feline whose signature outfit is a red and white striped hat and red bow. The Cat is determined to entertain a pair of siblings new to town while their mother is away, only to wreck their house. Don’t worry, he’s well-trained, so he cleans up his messes.
A 2003 live-action adaptation of the book starring Mike Myers was, shall we say, not well-received. Perhaps a revamped animated version of an age-old story will get audiences excited? Everyone knows we prefer that as opposed to original storytelling, especially the people in charge of creative decisions, right?
Anyway, at least the rest of the ensemble is extremely talented. The Cat In The Hat also stars Bowen Yang, Paula Pell, Matt Berry, and Xochitl Gomez. The film is co-written and co-directed by Alessandro Carloni (the Kung Fu Panda films) and Clone High’s Erica Rivinoja. It’s the first of many features the studio is developing in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, according to Variety.
Still, despite the stacked cast, take any animation news coming out of WB with a huge grain of salt. What if it never even sees the light of day? Then again, this movie is greenlit by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation under new President Bill Damaschke, so let’s see what kind of precedent he’s about to set.
The Cat In The Hat is scheduled to be released on March 6, 2026.
