It’s a bleak time for fans of those most excellent time travelers, Bill S. Preston, Esquire, and Ted “Theodore” Logan. Though Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, and writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson continue to work on a script for a sequel to 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, they do so in a world of darkness where George Carlin is dead, the Stallyns have been Tamyd, and San Dimas High School Football no longer rules. The Bills and the Teds of our imaginations are middle-aged now, dragged inexorably toward maturity by the grasping hands of time, when once they were its laughing masters.
But thanks to the magic of comic books, it seems that at least one version of Bill and Ted will stay young forever. Yes, strange things are afoot at Boom! Studios, where it was recently announced that a new Bill & Ted comic series, titled Bill & Ted’s Most Triumphant Return, is in the works. The comic will feature a main story from Brian Lynch and Jerry Gaylord, and a back-up story by Bravest Warriors’ Ian McGinty and Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics and the Eisner Award-winning Adventure Time adaptation.
The main story will feature the duo, squaring off as teens in the future against their nemesis from the second movie, Chuck De Nomolos, because that’s something you can do when you’re just drawing stuff that you think of, like you used to do when you were a kid. When all you had to worry about was playing music, and traveling through time, and staying young and awesome forever, instead of budgets and script meetings and the goddamned mortgage. Bill & Ted’s Triumphant Return debuts in March, with covers by Felipe Smith and Goni Montes.
