Billy Corgan posts very Billy Corgan explanation of why Tommy Lee is in his band now
Billy Corgan has posted a very long, very Billy Corgan-ish explanation of how Tommy Lee came to drum with Smashing Pumpkins, and how Lee’s “shockla-locka boom” has trasformed the group into the “Supersonic Pumpkins.” The whole ridiculous thing is over on the Pumpkins’ website, but in a nutshell: Corgan says the suggestion to reach out to Lee came from someone named “The Shredder,” that Lee is one of the “all-time greats,” that he’s blessed with a “universal language” that he applies “with heart/soul” in order to “present intangibles that give dimension and depth to a composition which otherwise would not be as kaleidoscopic”—as always, whatever that means. Corgan also raves about how Lee’s “heavy drums sound soft and expressive” on the nine tracks he’s recorded, something that Corgan says he’s only heard happen on John Bonham’s tracks with Led Zeppelin.
According to the post, the two first met in 1991 when Lee went to a Smashing Pumpkins show. Corgan also says “the coupling is not as odd as some might assume,” as both men have “pushed into embracing new technologies, electronics, etc. where it pertains to making new sounds.” Lee, however, does not own a teashop and Corgan (thank God) has not recorded a widely distributed sex tape.
