Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is rebooting Bewitched
With Charmed coming back, the Suspiria remake on the way, and “Witchy Woman” helping the Eagles to a baffling milestone, it’s clear that witches are having a moment. Now, Deadline is reporting that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris sold one more show to ABC before he left for the greener pastures of Netflix: A reboot of classic witch sitcom Bewitched that he created with Black-ish writer Yamara Taylor. Deadline’s report says that this new Bewitched is about a “hardworking, black single mom” named Samantha who marries a white slacker named Darren. Of course, even though Samantha is also a witch with real magic powers, “she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”
Surprisingly, this sounds like a legitimately new take on Bewitched, even though ABC and Sony have spent the decades since the original series ended trying to come up with a way to revitalize the series. The network tried to make new Bewitched shows in 2014 and 2011 that didn’t make it past the pilot stage, and then there was the 2005 movie version with Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman that nobody liked.
