Black Jesus will rise on Adult Swim
Looking to give Christian conservatives something to focus their rage on besides Cosmos, Adult Swim has given a green light to the new live-action half-hour comedy Black Jesus, from the mind of The Boondocks’ Aaron McGruder and the nightmares of Fox News’ Megyn Kelly. The show will star Gerald “Slink” Johnson—primarily known for his voice work, such as playing “Lando” on the Boondocks and “Lamar” in Grand Theft Auto V—stepping into the role of a modern-day Jesus living in Compton, where he spreads his message to a presumably rough-and-tumble neighborhood that includes co-stars and possible apostles Corey Holcomb, John Witherspoon, and Charlie Murphy. (Murphy’s joke—“What did the five fingers say to the face?… I forgive you”—is already poised to be a breakout.)
Black Jesus is expected to premiere this year (along with the fourth season of The Boondocks), though exactly when remains a mystery. After all, waiting around and no one really knowing anything is kind of Jesus’ deal.
