Bloc Party apparently is looking for a new singer
Firing a band member (especially the lead singer) can be a touchy proposition. Just ask the members of the British post-punk group Bloc Party, who recently announced that they "might get a singer" for the band's first new songs since 2008's Intimacy. But what about Bloc Party's, you know, lead singer Kele Okereke? It appears that Okereke is currently out of the loop with his bandmates, who apparently didn't tell him that they were recording. In an interview with NME, Okereke outlines a scenario straight out of a low-rent CW soap-opera, claiming that he serendipitously discovered his band gathering in a New York rehearsal space without him several weeks ago. "I hope I haven't been fired," he said. "I don't really know what's going on, because we haven't really spoken recently and I'm a bit too scared to ask."
Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack claims there are no "bad vibes" with Okereke, just that the band is sick of waiting to make himself available. "It's not really a secret because Kele's been pretty busy doing solo stuff and it looks like he's going to be doing that a bit longer," Lissack said."The other three of us wanted to meet up and make music. We were talking about just doing an instrumental thing, but now we might get a singer as well, to properly put some music out and play some shows." So, if you want to be Bloc Party's new singer, you have an opportunity. Just be aware that when you audition, Okereke will likely be watching in the distance, softly crying. [Via NME]
UPDATE: So, maybe Bloc Party isn't looking for a new singer after all. A post on the band's website says that "Bloc Party is still Bloc Party" and Okereke isn't being replaced. Something tells us that the next band meeting is going to be super awkward.
