Bob Costas is stepping down as NBC’s Olympics host

It’s the end of an era at NBC as the network has announced that Bob Costas is stepping down as its primetime Olympics host. Starting with next year’s Winter Games in South Korea, NBC’s new Olympics host will be Mike Tirico, a former Monday Night Football play-by-play announcer and ESPN host who joined NBC Sports specifically for some kind of big opportunity like this. According to The Wrap, Tirico was also set to take on a full-time position on Sunday Night Football, but it’s unclear if that will happen along with his new Olympics gig.

Costas announced the news on Today this morning, saying that he’ll “be like the rest of the country” in 2018, “watching Mike Tirico.” He also added that Tirico “will be an able successor in Korea for the Winter Olympics.” As for Costas’ future, he says he’ll be the Tom Brokaw of sports for NBC, popping up whenever he’s needed.

You can see a video of Costas and Tirico on Today below.
