Bobcat Goldthwait confesses the really inappropriate New Year's Eve prank he played on Jimmy Kimmel

Bobcat Goldthwait started out as a sweat-drenched, yowling standup comic, but he’s forged a legitimately impressive second career as a writer-director of thoughtfully provocative, darkly comic indie films (with the occasional Bigfoot flick thrown in). It’s not that surprising, really—Goldthwait’s standup was always a lot better than his feral schtick suggested—but, on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Goldthwait revealed that, while it’s possible to have a compelling second act in entertainment, the themes often remain the same.

For one thing, Goldthwait brought along a clip of his new show Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits And Monsters (premiering Wednesday), a twisted Twilight Zone-esque horror-comedy anthology series he’s created for TruTV. With tales about a voice actor (Seth Green) being stalked by the resentful cartoon bear he brings to bumbling life, and a folksy, straight-shootin’ used car salesman (David Koechner) whose secret life as a baby-eating werewolf doesn’t prevent his rabid yahoo minions from making him president (you get it), the series is another showcase for the former talking horse and Steve Guttenberg nemesis to ply his signature irreverence.

Speaking of “irreverent,” that’s one way to characterize the story Goldthwait revealed about the time he, attending former boss Kimmel’s long-ago New Year’s Eve party, took advantage of the fact that Kimmel conked out before midnight to do something… let’s just stick with “irreverent.” Sure, Goldthwait may have admitted his… deed… a little sheepishly in the present day (and claims that Kimmel’s house band put him up to the telling), but there was still some clear delight in Kimmel’s obvious, if momentary, shock. It turns out Goldthwait—who’s directed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Man Show in his day—might be a better talk show guest than party guest, as Kimmel’s grudgingly appreciative laughter suggested.
