Boombox aficionado John Cusack in talks to play old Brian Wilson, starring in a new Cronenberg movie

After a not-great turn as Edgar Allen Poe in 2012’s The Raven, John Cusack has somehow become a hot Hollywood commodity again. The boombox-holder has landed the starring role in David Cronenberg’s upcoming thriller, Maps To The Stars, which he’ll appear in with Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, and Sarah Gadon. The film, which Cronenberg’s been trying to get made since 2006, is based on a script from Bruce Wagner that somehow involves both ghosts and, as Variety puts it, “an attack on the celebrity-obsessed society in Los Angeles.” Spooky.

Cusack, who is 46, is also reportedly in talks to play old, crazy, drug-addled Brian Wilson in the upcoming biopic about the Beach Boy. Paul Dano signed on to play young Brian Wilson in Love And Mercy earlier this year. Bill Pohlad will direct. Owen Moverman (I’m Not There, The Messenger) wrote the script, and Trent Reznor cohort Atticus Ross is scoring the film.
