Kim Quatro and Kim Dantzler are bounty hunters and best friends trying to make it on their own, but tracking people is a challenge when the search area is a sprawling sci-fi universe. Kim & Kim’s debut issue was a fun, compelling introduction to this world and its characters, and the story only gets more exciting as the two women wind up way over their heads with their latest bounty. Their search for the mysterious Lady Babylon takes them to an underwater city in this week’s Kim & Kim #2, and when that trip leads to a dead end, they take a more mystical approach to the job by engaging in some entry-level necromancy. This preview of Kim & Kim #2 spotlights the cool, relaxed atmosphere that gives the book a lot of its charm, and writer Magdalene Visaggio, artist Eva Cabrera, and colorist Claudia Aguirre keep the tone light, even as the danger mounts.
Visaggio always finds a way to inject humor into her scenes, and little moments like everyone putting on eyeliner as a key part of the necromancy process show that the creative team isn’t taking itself too seriously. That doesn’t mean that there’s no drama, though; these pages also delve into Kim Quatro’s tenuous relationship with her father. Their dynamic is evocatively summarized in the panel of Furious Quatro calling his trans daughter, and the name and picture he uses for her on his phone highlights his refusal to acknowledge his daughter’s trans identity. Visaggio’s script is enriched by the bright, animated artwork from Cabrera and Aguirre. Cabrera’s expressive characters and stylish design work pull the reader deeper into this world, and Aguirre’s vibrant coloring accentuates the tonal shifts as the story moves in different direction.
