Brad Bird makes Incredibles 2 a priority while flirting with Star Wars
A sequel to Brad Bird’s The Incredibles may be the film that Pixar fans clamor for the most. Perhaps sensing our collective sequel outcry—and deciding to mess with us a bit—Pixar has responded with Cars 2, Toy Story 3, and Monsters University. Bird, meanwhile, went on to direct Ratatouille before jumping into live action with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
And as the release of his new film, Tomorrowland, approaches, Bird has apparently been flirting with an even bigger live-action franchise. When asked about the vacancy created by Josh Trank’s departure in a new interview with Collider, Bird said he had talked with Star Wars Grand Moff Kathleen Kennedy, admitting, “Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it.” Bird quickly backed off, however, asking the interviewers to “just avoid all this Star Wars stuff” while presumably projecting questions about Incredibles 2 into the interviewer’s mind with a Jedi mind trick.
And while Bird has already confirmed he’s working on an Incredibles sequel, he now sounds certain it will be his next project. “Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages,” Bird confirms. When pressed if he was certain that Incredibles 2 would be his next project, he answers, “Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.” That’s exciting news, but it also casts doubt that he’d be replacing Josh Trank, as Bird tends to take his time with film projects. Given Disney’s robust pace of planned Star Wars release dates, it’s more likely that The Incredibles 2 will hit theaters the same year as Star Wars: Ladies Love Boba Fett.
In the meantime, Pixar will satiate/punish our vocal desire to see the reunion of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Dash, and Violet by reuniting other Pixar characters for a fourth Toy Story, a Finding Nemo sequel, and yes, another Cars entry.
