Breaking Bad reaches deal for final 16 episodes

After weeks of tense negotiation and public shaming, AMC and Sony have reached a deal at last on the future of Breaking Bad, ordering 16 more episodes beyond the current season. As suggested earlier, it’s probable that those episodes will be spread out over a couple of years to save on costs, which means Walter White could be destroying lives well into 2013—or even 2014, as the Los Angeles Times argues that it’s quite possible that the show won’t be seen at all in 2012, thereby saving the network even more money. No official word on that yet, of course. Creator Vince Gilligan promised in the press release that the decision would allow Breaking Bad’s creative staff “to properly build our story to a satisfying conclusion,” adding, “Now, if we don’t manage to pull that off, we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves.” Actually, should they fail somehow, you could probably still find a way to blame AMC, and maybe even Matthew Weiner. But that’s focusing on the negative, when we should be thinking about the positives—namely, all the horrible, horrible things that will continue to happen on Breaking Bad.
