Breaking Bad’s composer will return for Better Call Saul

If the music in that catchy Better Call Saul jingle seemed familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard the composer’s work before: It was co-written by Dave Porter, who wrote Breaking Bad’s iconic, twanging theme song, and scored all 62 episodes of AMC’s meth-cooking epic. And now Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan has confirmed that Porter will be returning to lend his talents to the Bob Odenkirk-starring spin-off, which is set to start airing next February.

“Dave Porter is an irreplaceable member of the Breaking Bad family, and we’re thrilled to have him aboard Better Call Saul,” Gilligan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “He gets right to the heart of every scene, writing score that resonates perfectly with the story. I can’t imagine doing our new show without him.”

Although Breaking Bad usually gets more attention for its brilliant, often-ironic use of licensed music, Porter’s score contributed to some of the show’s most tense and dramatic moments. Just cue up “Crawl Space” from the show’s soundtrack albumlistening to the way the frantic chase, quiet, pounding heartbeats, and rising wind evoke that episode’s famously disturbing climaxand you’ll be viscerally reminded of his work’s impact on the show.
