Brendan Gleeson, Michelle Fairley to birth modern Ireland in SundanceTV drama

SundanceTV is co-producing an Irish historical drama, Rebellion, Variety reports. Starring legendarily miffed Irishman Brendan Gleeson alongside Ruth Bradley (Grabbers) and Michelle Fairley (Game Of Thrones), the project is a five-part miniseries examining the birth of modern Ireland from the perspective of three young women. The miniseries was scripted by Irish screenwriter Colin Teevan and will be helmed by Finnish director Aku Louhimies.

Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV, says, “Sharing this story about the history of Ireland and its people is so important to SundanceTV not only because it underscores our commitment to showcasing unique voices from around the globe, but also because we believe the struggles and triumphs seen throughout the series will resonate strongly with audiences today.” By “unique voices,” we’re not sure if he means developing a series based entirely on Irish characters, or rooting it in the perspective of women, a demographic not commonly highlighted in Irish historical epics. Either way, kudos to SundanceTV, and we almost feel bad for admitting that we’re still most excited about seeing Gleeson’s legendary glower—through the eyes of women, of course.

Rebellion is set to air on Sundance and Ireland’s RTE next year.
