Even as he readies to sing an epic song of Hercules, Brett Ratner is using the hand not currently plucking his lute to grab fistfuls of a more modern mythology—namely, the saga of MTV, and how it defied the gods by giving man the ability to see music as a series of loosely related images, then paid dreadful penance as Martha Quinn was transformed into a goat. Variety reports that Ratner—a veteran of the network thanks to his videos for artists like Mariah Carey and Madonna—is close to a deal to produce and possibly direct an adaptation of Craig Marks’ and Rob Tannenbaum’s oral history I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story Of The Music Video Revolution. It’s the tale of how a purveyor of rapid-fire, heavily stylized clips devoid of substance yet loaded with cleavage evolved into one of the media’s most reliable sources for unabashed artifice and anti-intellectual discourse, then announced he was going to make an MTV movie.
