Brie Larson shoots ’em up in the first trailer for Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire

Ben Wheatley’s 70s gangster flick Free Fire kicked off the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness slate with a premiere screening in the wee hours of the morning. Now, A24 has released the first trailer for the film which you can see above. It sets up the basics: Two factions go in to make an arms deal, a conflict emerges following which—boom! pow!—the guns start going off and extremities start suffering. A lot of the trailer—(and, for that matter, most of the movie)—finds its cast, including Oscar-winner Brie Larson, writhing in dirt, fending off the pain of wounds, and aiming weapons at one another. Sharlto Copley plays a vain numbskull, and Armie Hammer supplies some smugness.

At a Q&A following the screening, Larson explained that the process of making the film,“felt like a really long drawn out game of laser tag.” That sounds really fun, but onscreen it translates to an affair that’s far bloodier than your average suburban birthday party.

Free Fire is set to blow its way into theaters sometime in 2017.
