Film star, Gallic sex symbol, and occasional Serge Gainsbourg muse Brigitte Bardot has been convicted of provoking discrimination and racial hatred after claiming that Muslims are destroying France. Bardot, a prominent campaigner for animal rights, was outraged about the Muslim feast of Aid el-Kebir (which is celebrated by slaughtering sheep), and wrote a letter last December to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy saying that France is "tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts." Anti-racism group MRAP filed a lawsuit after Bardot published the letter in her foundation's quarterly journal, and the Paris court responded with a hefty fine of $23,325 handed down today. The star has been convicted five times now for inciting racial hatred, which her lawyer defended by saying, "She will not be silenced in her defense of animal rights."
