Because The A.V. Club knows that TV shows keep going even if we’re not writing at length about them, we’re experimenting with discussion posts. For certain shows, one of our TV writers will publish some brief thoughts about the latest episode, and open the comments for readers to share theirs.
- “Typical… A woman gets attacked and all the men go around butting horns, making it all about them.” Do people not get that just attacking someone is against the law? Has no one heard of charges like “assault”?
- The “Shut up, Katie” this week seems like a given, but: “Ed Burnett’s my dad” is a pretty egregious omission. Man, I would never want to get Hardy mad at me.
- Also: “You’ve never liked me, have you, Ellie.” Not all about you, Katie! Also: “Please don’t take me off the case.” Are you kidding?
- I am kind of torn on Mark’s storyline this season. I appreciate the ties back to Danny’s death, the tragedy that kicked off the whole series. The late-night flashback is heartbreaking, showing a sweet moment between a boy and his dad when the worse thing either can imagine is a bad mark on an exam paper.
So I can understand Mark’s obsession in finding Joe Miller, as well as the anguish when he realizes that finding Joe still isn’t going to bring him any peace. It compounds the tragedy that Mark can’t be there for the rest of his family because he’s still so focused on Danny, underlined with one final sweet phone call to Chloe. Still, I wasn’t prepared for that ending drowning scene, done in that blue, moody way that Broadchurch does so well. - I’m also appreciating Broadchurch’s continued explorations of different sides of a rape case, by featuring the victim who doesn’t want to speak up, and explaining her reasons why she doesn’t want to do so. But also showing Beth’s anger and frustration over the fact that the victim won’t talk to the police.
- “Get your COAT!”
- Loved Ellie smashing Tom’s electronics with a hammer. Like your poor mom hasn’t been through enough, Tom!
- Trish’s ex Ian seems like a straight-up worthless human. What kind of father lies to his daughter about six times in a couple of minutes?
- Runner-up: Jim the adulterous garage owner. “It’s not that bad.” And “I’m the victim here.”
- Still, guiltiest suspect this week has to be Ed, even though it’s likely not him, with two episodes still to go. But the obsessive photos, the stalking, and his violent history make it understandable that Hardy wants to keep him in custody for a while.
