Browser extension helpfully changes "Elon Musk" to "Grimes's Boyfriend"
If you, too, have been struggling with the cognitive dissonance that Grimes, a genre-eviscerating musician who has created several world-class records and EPs and also one of the best music videos ever, is now dating Elon Musk, an extremely uncool rich guy who someone once described as a real-world Tony Stark and who now seems obsessed with living up to that description, including such corny-ass enterprises as selling big flamethrowers and claiming he’s going to send a cyborg dragon to space or whatever—well, you are not alone. It’s very weird. Grimes is a wonderfully eccentric individual who has forged an audio-visual style all her own, and now she showed up at The MET Gala wearing a Tesla logo as a choker. This should not be.
Fortunately, there’s help out there. A new Chrome extension will replace all instances of “Elon Musk” with “Grimes’s Boyfriend,” thus restoring order to the universe. Because, while this relationship can’t necessarily be undone, we can at least reconfigure our perception of things, such that the guy who can’t make enough cars and wants to build a big tunnel(?) and also does comedy now is subservient to the person who did the Geidi Primes EP, which owns. The extension also doubles as a handy bit of social commentary on the way women are often billed in news stories merely as the accessories of their husbands.
It all started as an off-hand joke from The Verge’s T.C. Sottek, which he illustrated with a few manual Photoshops. Developer James Bartholomeu then turned this dream into an automated reality via the extension, which you can and should download here. There is, of course, a Chrome extension for everything these days, from adding cats to all your tabs to removing Star Wars spoilers from the internet. But there’s something wonderfully functional about changing “Elon Musk” to “Grimes’s Boyfriend,” as these newly updated A.V. Club headlines prove:
