Well, that was fun while it lasted. The short-lived magic of the rebooted Buffalo Springfield is now abruptly over. After reuniting for the first time since 1968 for a benefit concert in 2010 and a Bonnaroo performance last summer, the Neil Young-fronted fivesome has canceled an upcoming tour and is apparently once again disbanded, according to guitarist Richie Furay.
No official reason for the band's off-again status has been given at this point. But Furay hinted in a recent radio interview with WBAI that Neil Young, in characteristic Neil Young fashion, flaked: “I was actually told, ‘We’re doing this 30-day tour,’” Furay said in a recent radio interview with WBAI. “And, you know, Neil is just fickle and even though it boils down to all three of us”—referring to himself, Young, and fellow founding and current member Stephen Stills—“making a decision … without the three of us, really there can’t be anything that would even resemble a Buffalo Springfield.”
“We probably lost a little bit of our momentum,” Furay continued. “That isn’t to say it couldn’t be picked up again, but I certainly don’t see anything happening this year.” Buffalo Springfield’s tour was originally scheduled for late 2011, then pushed back to 2012—and the plan has since apparently been abandoned.
Furay’s manager David Spero reassured Rolling Stone last fall that “Buffalo Springfield is still at the top of Neil’s list of priorities.” But after even the most casual leafing through Neil Young’s publicized activities of the past few months, one might be forced to suspect otherwise.
