Capcom unveils Resident Evil 7, and it’s looking very different

Resident Evil is back, and it looks like it loved P.T. just as much as everyone on the internet did. Announced last night at Sony’s E3 conference, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard will be played from a first-person perspective, meaning you’ll be taking in all the frights from the viewpoint of your character. That isn’t a first for the series, but it is the first time a mainline, numbered Resident Evil has tried moving to this view, a bold choice as the series looks to rebuild from the disastrous Resident Evil 6.

Capcom seems serious this time about bringing horror back to the granddaddy of survival-horror games. With Resident Evil 4, the series had its first metamorphosis and gradually became much more about action than scares. Resident Evil 7 looks to dial things back, taking place in modern rural America and, in a nod to the series’ roots, centering on a dilapidated plantation mansion. Even when watching in a theater packed with thousands of people, the brief demo at Sony’s show was plenty creepy, tapping into the kind of oppressive dread that fueled P.T. and its contemporaries. And if you’d like to make it extra terrifying, the game will be playable from start-to-finish on the PlayStation 4’s upcoming virtual reality headset.

As if the company knew these big changes would take some getting used to—and more likely, stir up some internet outrage—Capcom has borrowed another page from the Silent Hills/P.T. handbook and released a playable teaser to give fans a taste of the game. Called Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour, it’s currently only available to PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS4 and will be making its way to other platforms at an unspecified date. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is scheduled to be released on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 24, 2017.
