Captain America's Joe Johnston in talks to direct yet another alien invasion film that doesn't yet star Tom Cruise

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston is in negotiations to direct a new sci-fi film called Extinction. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows a man trying to save his family during an alien invasion. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville (Warm Bodies) are set to produce from a scwritten by Spenser Cohen.

Extinction joins a slew of upcoming alien invasion movies, including Tom Cruise’s Edge Of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise’s Our Name Is Adam, and Tom Cruise’s Yukikaze. Does the sudden influx of alien invasion movies starring Tom Cruise—let’s not forget 2013’s Oblivion—mean the actor knows something we don’t know? And does Johnston now know it too? Granted, this could indicate nothing more than the fact that people still enjoy watching aliens blow stuff up. But the minute Tom Cruise signs on for the lead in Extinction, we recommend holding your children closer and heading for the hills.
