Captain Marvel is kicking the box office's ass

We can now add “the American box office” to the various things whose ass Carol Danvers has officially kicked; per Variety, the MCU’s latest big-budget offering, Captain Marvel, is on track to make more than $150 million at the domestic box office this weekend, making it the most successful 2019 film premiere to date—and by, like, a lot. (Its nearest competitor was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, which made roughly a quarter of that number when it debuted back in January.)

Of course, as a Marvel movie, Captain Marvel’s success can only really be compared in terms of its fellow CGI-heavy costumed epics—in which case, it’s still sitting fairly pretty. If it stays on its current course, Brie Larson’s Skrull-punching debut outing will end up being the seventh-most successful MCU opening to date, trailing behind only the Avengers films, Black Panther, Civil War, and, uh, Iron Man 3. (What can we say? Once upon a time we were all really excited to watch Ben Kingsley fight Robert Downey Jr.!)

All of which would seem to confirm what we all probably assumed, on some level: trolling campaigns and half-hearted boycotts from small groups of disgruntled comic fans apparently can’t do a whole hell of a lot to move the needle in the face of the crushing power of a new MCU blockbuster. (Unless, of course, you want to speculate that Captain Marvel would have brought in even more heaping wheelbarrows of cash if people hadn’t been screwing with its Rotten Tomatoes scores.) Of course, Captain Marvel itself is probably going to see these numbers blown out of the water when Avengers: Endgame arrives next month, but hey: That’s April’s box office’s problem.
