Cardi B confirms she turned down "a lot of money" to play the Super Bowl half-time show
Breaking the hearts of Maroon 5 fans everywhere—holding out hope against hope that one of America’s fastest-rising rap talents might swoop in tomorrow to save us all from a Cardi-B-free Super Bowl half-time show—the “Bodak Yellow” rapper has confirmed that she won’t be playing at the Huge Game. adding that she turned down “a lot of money” in the process.
This is per an Associated Press interview that Cardi gave last night, in which she made it clear that she was choosing to stand in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and other protesting NFL players, in the face of prejudice, oppression, and very large amounts of cash. “You have to sacrifice that,” she noted, adding that both she and her (estranged?) husband Offset decided they had to “stand for something” on this topic. “I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”
Instead of their “Girls Like You” co-performer, Maroon 5 will instead be performing with Big Boi and Travis Scott at tomorrow’s show. Cardi will still be in the area, though; she’s throwing a Super Bowl party in Atlanta, on the grounds that she has principles, not an overwhelming aversion to cash: “It’s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all. Y’all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y’all and take money from y’all too? Because of y’all, we are getting these parties. OK, thank you.”
