Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery developing TV remake of '80s sci-fi movie Explorers
According to Deadline, Maniac and Bond 25 director Cary Fukunaga is teaming up with The Old Man And The Gun director David Lowery to develop a TV adaptation of Joe Dante’s 1985 sci-fi movie Explorers. The original movie starred Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jasson Presson as teenage sci-fi nerds who end up building a spaceship and meeting aliens after one of them has dreams about weird, high-tech blueprints. Explorers was definitely not a success when it first came out, but it has since become a cult hit thanks to its popularity on home video and the legitimate success of Dante’s other films (specifically Gremlins), so giving Explorers a chance to live again as a TV show could solidify its cult status even further.
We don’t know anything about what Fukunaga and Lowery are planning, and though they’re working with Paramount Television, no TV network/streaming service is actually attached just yet.
