Cate Blanchett to play Lucille Ball in new Aaron Sorkin biopic
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Cate Blanchett will be starring in a new biopic about comedy legend Lucille Ball, written by Aaron Sorkin—a man whose convoluted, fast-paced dialogue starts at “Vitameatavegamin,” and only gets more complicated from there. The film will apparently focus on Ball’s 20-year marriage to Desi Arnaz, with Blanchett playing the famed comedienne. (Arnaz, who co-created I Love Lucy with Ball, and remained friends with her even after their 1960 divorce, has yet to be cast.)
The movie will be Sorkin’s second biopic written in the last few years; the Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs is set to come out next month, with Michael Fassbender in the title role. Blanchett, meanwhile, is a relative newcomer to both comedy and the biopic market; her natural calm will be an interesting contrast to Ball’s mastery of perfectly deployed mugging, as she and Sorkin work together to do some ’splainin’ about the actress’s many-faceted life.
