CBS has released the first pictures of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl

In an act of superheroism that will save entertainment editors everywhere from having to dig up old comic-book scans or pictures of Helen Slater, CBS has released the first images of what Melissa Benoist’s Kara Zor-El will look like in its upcoming Supergirl series. In a staggering departure from graphic novel canon, the former Glee star will forgo her comic book counterpart’s skin-tight, midriff-baring battle garb for this eminently reasonable ensemble:

By the sometimes physiologically improbable standards of superheroine costumes, Benoist’s mesh jacket is the equivalent of one of those dowdy old bathing suits from the 1920s, with nary a hint of Lycra or naked flesh to be found. (The miniskirt, a flying heroine’s favorite fashion accessory, is still there, but at least it’s over tights now.) The most notable thing about the costume, though, is the color scheme: In a clear nod to Warner Bros. and its Man Of Steel franchise, Kara will be sporting a muted navy blue and maroon instead of the bright primary colors of Kryptonians past. It remains to be seen whether that’s a hint at some some sort of planned crossover, or just a critical inventory shortage at Bob’s Big House Of Bright Blue Mesh.
