CBS is developing a Patty Hearst limited series

If you loved what Jonathan Tolins did as the co-writer of Grease Live!, Fox’s critically acclaimed televised adaptation of the 1971 hit musical, then you’ll maybe be interested in his new ‘70s-centric TV project. Or maybe not. They’re pretty different. Although it does sound intriguing: The Connecticut-based playwright is currently developing a limited series with CBS about the kidnapping and alleged brainwashing of Patty Hearst, Deadline reports.

The planned miniseries will follow the strange events surrounding the 19-year-old heiress’ abduction in Berkeley, California by the left-wing terrorist group the Symbionese Liberation Army. Once in the custody of the revolutionary organization, Hearst—the granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst—was supposedly subjected to coercive persuasion techniques, became an SLA sympathizer, and renamed herself “Tania.” Several months after her disappearance, she was photographed brandishing a semi-automatic rifle during a bank robbery in San Francisco. After being arrested and booked into jail in 1975, she listed her occupation as “Urban Guerilla.” The true-crime adaptation will likely contain few musical numbers.
