Determined not to miss out on all the critical praise and fancy Emmy nominations that went zooming over to Netflix the last time a network passed on a comedy from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and Jack Burditt, the major networks recently engaged in a competitive bidding war for an as-yet-untitled new show from the team. According to Deadline, CBS eventually emerged the victor, securing the rights to the multi-camera sitcom, which apparently centers on an athlete who “drives family, friends and strangers bonkers after he unexpectedly finds himself retired.” (“Bonkers” is presumably a clinical term that means “Starts a sentence in a normal way, before suddenly veering off into a pretty great joke, maybe about hasbrowns or paninis.”)
Writing duties for the show will fall on Burditt; his previous credits include 30 Rock, and the Tim Allen vehicle Last Man Standing, which he created. Meanwhile, this is the second series Fey and Carlock have sold this season, with NBC purchasing an also-untitled series written by 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield. (Fey’s Little Stranger production company looks to be on a roll this year, but apparently needs to hire someone to come up with names for its shows.)
