CBS realizes people will pay to keep commercials out of their Star Trek

CBS has gotten wise and realized that ads are not part of the utopian future Gene Roddenberry envisioned. The network announced today that it will be offering a commercial-free version of CBS All Access, which ensures that for just slightly more money people won’t have to endure brands’ yammering when they watch Star Trek: Discovery. To subscribe will cost $9.99 per month, which is $4 more than the previously-offered version.

So will it be worth it? Well, Variety reported earlier this month that CBS Interactive president Marc DeBevoise announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the streaming service’s original content would carry 12 minutes of commercials along with each episode. That’s an awful lot of time to spend checking texts. The company plans to launch some high-profile series, including the aforementioned Bryan Fuller Star Trek series, a spinoff of The Good Wife, and a digital-only Big Brother.
