CBS to air David Letterman farewell retrospective
In anticipation of David Letterman’s final night hosting The Late Show on May 20, CBS will be airing a 90-minute primetime special looking back on his television career. Hosted by Ray Romano—whose sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond was produced by Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants—the special will cover his beginnings as a weatherman in Indiana, where he was fired for antics like congratulating a tropical storm on being upgraded to a hurricane, making up fictional Indiana towns, and predicting “hailstones the size of canned hams.” It’ll also cover The David Letterman Show, the acclaimed but quickly canceled daytime talk show Letterman hosted before finding his niche in late night, as well as highlights from his 22 years hosting The Late Show on CBS. (It’s less clear whether CBS will also look back fondly on Letterman’s 11 years with NBC hosting Late Night.)
The special will air on May 4, and Stephen Colbert will take over The Late Show this September.
