We can finally get back on the Challengers hype train with new trailer
Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist, finally premieres April 26 after a strike-related delay
We all have our personal most painful strike-related cancellations and delays. One that cuts deep is Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. Originally set for release in September 2023, MGM whet our appetites with a sexy, titillating trailer back in May. But then the actors strike happened, Challengers got pushed to April 26, and we all had to suffer knowing “the tennis is the sex” movie was further out of our grasp. But now the Challengers hype machine is kicking back into gear, and a new trailer is here to get us back in the cutthroat, competitive mindset of professional sport.
The first trailer (set to Rihanna’s “S&M”) was largely told from O’Connor and Faist’s perspective, as they both fell in love (or lust) with world-class tennis champion Tashi Duncan (Zendaya). This trailer (set to Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater”) is told from Tashi’s. As a young star at the top of her game, Tashi has total confidence toying with Patrick (O’Connor) and Art (Faist). But after an ACL injury takes her off the court for good, Tashi finds herself choosing between the two men not just romantically, but professionally as a potential coach. Ultimately she has to choose just one of them to hitch her wagon to, but the three of them nevertheless remain inextricably and toxically entwined.
As a bonus—and perhaps to make up for lost time—the new trailer suggests you head over to Zendaya’s Instagram “for an exclusive look at her personal video diaries from set.” Tacked on to the end of the trailer, it’s not a substantial behind-the-scenes look, but it is charming, and the clip ends with a promise that the insider look is “to be continued.” Finally, we’re getting the full Challengers press tour that was denied to us back in Summer 2023! Nature really is healing!
